who, according to legend, slew the dragon, and conquered over evil. It
is a 27-mile-long barrier island, the crown jewel of Florida’s
Forgotten Coast. Its beauty and tranquility makes it the perfect
vacation spot to relax and “get away from it all”. The island
primarily offers family-oriented outdoors activities. Swimming in the
Ocean and the private pool, other water sports (surfing, sailing,
kayaking, boat and jet ski rentals, diving, snorkeling), sun bathing,
collecting seashells, building sand castles and walking are the main
attractions in the summer. The beaches are rarely crowded. The
beautiful white sand heats up far less than the dark sand of the
Atlantic coast of Florida, and rarely if ever becomes unbearably hot
to bare feet. The island is a fishermen’s paradise - fishing charters
and guided boat tours are available. St. George Island offers miles of
bike and walking trails with beautiful scenery. The dunes with their
natural vegetation make the scene characteristic and memorable. Rent a
bike, or bring your own. A State Park with seven miles of nature
preserve coastline is located at the eastern end of the island. The
park and island in general are excellent for bird watching (pelicans,
herons, seagulls) and viewing other wild life – dolphins patrolling
the beach and seasonal ghost crabs and turtles. The fabulous night sky
is excellent for stargazing. Horseback riding is available nearby.
Several restaurants on the island and across the bridge serve
excellent food, especially superb and fresh local seafood. These
waters are famous for producing the sweetest oysters, scallops and
juiciest shrimp.
FAQ:
Do I need a boat to get to the island?
No. The island is connected to the main land by a long and sturdy
concrete bridge.
How do I get to the beach?
The house is in the fourth row from the Gulf on W. Gulf Beach Drive.
As you are leaving the house, walk to the east, and take a right on
10th Street. It will directly lead to the beach. You can reach the
beach by a leisurely walk in 3 to 5 minutes.
Can we see the ocean from the house?
Yes, from the balcony and the windows facing to the south.
Is the cell phone connection reliable?
It may depend on your cell phone company. Verizon provides excellent
connection both in the house and at the beach front.
What items should we bring?
Bathing suits, beach towels, folding beach chairs, boogie boards,
bikes, flash lights, sun tan lotion (lots of it for frequent
application), aloe vera gel, mosquito repellent (seasonal, and mostly
needed in the evening), additional bathroom tissue, soap, shampoo &
conditioner, salt and pepper in shakers, coffee filters (note that the
kitchen does not provide any item for consumption for safety reasons),
groceries (you may wish to purchase them in local stores). Garbage
bags (13 gallon size), dishwashing detergent (hand wash and
automatic), smooth top cleaner (such as Weiman), sponge with
non-abrasive (blue) scratch pad, kitchen towel, paper towel, napkins,
laundry detergent, fabric softener sheets. You might enjoy having your
binoculars at hand. Don’t forget your camera and video camera and
their power supplies for recharging the batteries.
What do I need to access the internet?
If you wish to use the internet, you need to bring your computer.
Surge protectors are located at multiple locations to protect your
equipment (although we provide no warranty for damages stemming from
power surges). If your computer has no wireless capability, please
bring an Ethernet cable – you may connect your computer directly to
the modem. Do not bring your own cable modem – the internet service
provider will recognize the new device and ask for account information
that we cannot disclose to tenants.
What are the options for shopping?
St. George Island offers very limited shopping. There are convenience
stores at the gas stations, a small grocery store, and a few other
shops to buy items for the beach or to rent bicycles. You can do a
little more shopping in Eastpoint and Appalachicola. There is Piggly
Wiggly supermarket in Appalachicola. You will also find a pharmacy
near the supermarket. However, you will not find a Wal-Mart nearby.
Do you have a kennel?
We provide a kennel for your pet that is oversized for a 25 lb dog.
Can you make exceptions to allow smoking? Sorry, but no exceptions.
There are visitors with medical conditions, such as asthma, and these
visitors depend on the no-smoking policy.
What is the weather like on St. George Island? The following table
shows average high and low temperatures, and the range of typical
water temperature for each month. The highest precipitation is between
July and September. Often, these come in brief showers that typically
do not cool down the temperature. The humidity is nicer than on the
island than inland because of the nearly uninterrupted breeze,
especially at the shore. As is the case with the entire Gulf coast and
Florida in general, St. George Island is in a hurricane-prone area.
Thus, on rare occasion, there is mandatory evacuation of the island.
The complementary travel insurance policy would protect you against
loss of unused vacation time.
