Property Description
This is a comfortably furnished private residence. The “great room”
has a vaulted cedar ceiling with skylights. There are two large
bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with a queen; each has a
private bath and one of them has a Jacuzzi. The upper-story loft has
a convertible bed with access to its own half-bath and the upper
outside rear deck. The great room has access to another half-bath,
two covered porches, a laundry room, and three stairways to ground
level—one of which is sheltered from the weather.

Beneath the house is covered parking for up to two cars. At ground
level there is also a deck with a propane grill, an outside sink, and an
enclosed shower room (hot and cold) that is large enough to wash dogs
(as well as several humans).

The home also has cable TV and wireless internet access.

Property Amenities
No, we are not on the water. We are a half-block from the bay
and 3.5 blocks from the nearest of the Gulf beaches.

It's 6 blocks to the island’s small business district (2 convenience
stores, a market, several bars, a handful of restaurants, a bank,
several gift shops, and of course the ubiquitous realtors). There
are boat ramps six blocks in either direction; canoes or kayaks can
be launched in the bay a few hundred feet from the home.

All of the beaches on the island have public access. Nobody owns the
actual shoreline, so you'll have about 28 miles of beach to explore, plus
the Apalachicola River estuary, and several adjacent islands.
Most of the beaches here are dog-friendly (the exception being
the state park at the east end of the island).

Please note: Our guests generally supply their own linens (sheets,
pillowcases, bath towels, and beach towels). This greatly simplifies
our housekeeping, as well as assuring that your personal needs are
met to your satisfaction. If this is not practical for you (if you are flying
here, for instance), please contact us and we will meet your specific
linen needs for a modest fee. (We do leave miscellaneous clean linens
in the home for use in case guests have an emergency, and no, we do not
charge for their use.)

We supply pillows and blankets, detergents for laundry and dishes,
toilet tissue, and propane for the grill. The kitchen is fully equipped.
We also leave various courtesy items of beach paraphenalia
for your use, and sometimes bicycles, although the specifics may vary
from time to time.
Activities and Attractions
If you are looking for a wild party-style beach community, this
listing is not for you. The entire county of Franklin has a
permanent population of only 10,177. But if 28 miles of uncrowded
beaches (including 8 miles of pristine undeveloped white sand
coastline) appeal to you, you will love St. George Island as much as
we do.

West of SGI are two uninhabited barrier islands—Little St.
George and St. Vincent--accessible only by boat. To the north lies
Apalachicola Bay and the 247,000-acre Apalachicola River estuary--
mostly uninhabited state or national forest land and meandering
bayous. The estuary teems with wildlife and birds, and it attracts
both freshwater and saltwater sportsmen (and of course sportswomen).
We’ve personally seen wild bears, alligators, and even one panther in this
region.

St. George Island is 75 miles east of Panama City and is accessible
via a modern 4-mile-long bridge. Commercial shrimpers, oysterers,
and fishers sell their catches daily on the mainland. Historic
Apalachicola, about a dozen miles from here, offers restaurants,
shops, art galleries, a few riverfront bars, and 2 marinas.

There are no high-rises here. Except for the small commercial
zone, the entire island is zoned low-density residential.

What to do here? You need to be the kind of person who can entertain
him/herself. Maybe catch up on your reading. Bicycle (the island
has a bike path and rentals). Pick up shells (millions wash up,
particularly near the ends of the island). Swim. Canoe or kayak.
Charter a fishing boat. Sunbathe. But if you’re dependant on Wal-Marts
or movie theatres, be forewarned that the closest of those are about 75
miles from here.
