Captiva Island
is located south of St. Petersburg near the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico. Captiva and its larger sister island of Sanibel were voted by Money Magazine in 2002 as “among the best places to vacation in the world.” Both islands have long been known as one of the best places in the world for shelling. The pristine, white soft sand beaches are literally covered with beautiful and unusual seashells. Captiva also has a laid back easy lifestyle, breathtaking sunsets and some of the warmest winter temperatures in the country. Activities on the islands include golf, tennis, scuba diving and snorkeling. You can rent a boat for a day of deep-sea fishing, or take a romantic sunset cruise. A good way to tour the island is by bicycle or moped. More than half of Captiva and Sanibel are preserved as wildlife refuges. Here you can walk, bike, canoe or kayak through the J.N. (Ding) Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Accommodations, shopping and restaurants are abundant on the island of Captiva, but you will find no high rise condominiums or neon signs to compete with the scenery. Just quaint shops and art galleries, cafes and fine restaurants with live music.
Southwest Florida weather is one of the area's biggest assets. The region surrounding Fort Myers and Captiva/Sanibel Island is balmy in April and May, hot and humid (but bearable) June through September, and mild and sunny the rest of the year. The rainy season is June through September, with lots of showers and thunderstorms. The number of days without rain in the summer averages about 15. Late summer is hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico. The winter months, when it is drier with less humidity and almost perfect temperatures, is a great time to enjoy southwest Florida's weather. The white sand beaches of the Gulf and the nearby Caloosahatchee River provide visitors and residents plenty of scenic opportunities to enjoy this wonderful weather, also.
