Cross Creek is a picturesque community in Alachua County just southeast of Gainesville. It is most well known for being the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who wrote about Cross Creek in her books. Her home is now a State Historic Site open for guided tours Thursday through Sunday. The park, in which her farmhouse and orange grove are located, is open daily and tended by park rangers and volunteers. Cross Creek is a lovely town with tall pines and palmetto lining the roads. It is near Lochloosa and Orange Lakes where boating, fishing, canoeing, camping, birdwatching and hiking are available. Nearby Gainsville offers additional dining, accommodations and art and antique shopping. There are lots of interesting and beautiful sites to visit near Cross Creek in Alachua County, such as Bivens Arm Nature Park, the Dudley Farm Historical State Park, the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, Morningside Nature Center and Poe Springs Park. The town of Cross Creek has easy access to U.S. Interstate 75, making it a convenient stop for visitors.

North Central Florida, in the Gainesville area, has hot and humid summers with frequent thunderstorms. The rainy season generally runs from May through November. Northern Florida receives approximately 60 percent of its rain during this period, although thunderstorms usually pass quickly and the sunshine returns.
