Don Pedro Island
is part of an extensive chain of barrier islands along the Gulf Coast. It’s located halfway between Fort Myers and Sarasota, near Gasparilla Island. This piece of tropical paradise includes one mile of gorgeous white sand beach that is a state recreation area and is accessible only by private boat or ferry. Cars are allowed on the island, but most people use golf carts to get around. Don Pedro Island is excellent for year-round swimming and shelling, and the island has a picnic pavilion, tables, grills and public restrooms. The park also features an elevated sand dune that is covered with sea oats. There are day-use docks available for boating and fishing, located on the mangrove tree-covered bay side of the island. Other activities on Don Pedro include sailing, snorkeling, windsurfing and hiking along trails that meander through the island’s eleven distinct nature communities. Sea nesting season on Don Pedro Island runs from May through September when visitors are asked to exercise caution and not disturb the nesting sites. Guided walks and educational programs about the turtles are available by park rangers. Other wildlife that may be seen on the island includes West Indian manatee, gopher tortoise, southern Bald Eagle, and American Oystercatcher. Visitors to Don Pedro Island enjoy the peaceful seclusion, natural beauty and tropical wildlife, as well as the breathtaking sunsets. Shopping, restaurants and golf are located nearby on the mainland.
The Southwest Region of Florida, between Sarasota and Fort Myers, has comfortable weather year round. At 5 to 25 feet above sea level, the region has a subtropic climate that is checked by the tempering influence of the Gulf of Mexico. The Peace River, as well as the Gulf of Mexico, contributes to the hot and humid climate in the summertime (but it's not unbearable due to cooling Gulf breezes.)Prevailing winds are normally 12-18 mph. The rainy season lasts from June through September, with rain spread fairly evenly throughout those months. Thunderstorms tend to pop up quickly but also dissipate just as quickly, with the sunshine quickly returning. The winters are lovely with warm afternoons and mild evenings and much less rain. Hurricane season generally runs late summer through late October in the Gulf of Mexico.
