Fort White
is a tiny town located in Columbia County in Central Florida just four miles from the Ichetucknee Springs State Park. The park has two main entrances, and tubes can be rented from vendors just outside the park entrances. There is also a full concession stand located at the south entrance that is open every day during the summer season. A series of natural springs provides clear, sparkling water for the Ichetucknee River, which is what has made the Ichetucknee Springs State Park a very popular tubing spot. Park visitors can float leisurely on tubes past pristine woodlands and limestone outcrops, taking in the wildlife and scenic natural beauty surrounding them. Other activities in the park include swimming, canoeing, hiking and picnicking. Fort White is near the town of Lake City, home to the “Florida Sports Hall of Fame and Museum,” and a large portion of the Osceola National Forest is located inside Columbia County, of which Lake City is the county seat. Fort White is also conveniently located approximately sixty miles from either Florida coast.
Northeast Florida, just over the Georgia State line, enjoys a climate of mild winters and warm summers. This region has a very pleasant annual average temperature of 69 degrees. The North Florida winters include pleasant days and crisp, invigorating evenings. Nighttime temperatures are generally a few degrees lower than southern Florida, due to the latitude and prevailing northerly winds. The summers in northeastern Florida are warm and sunny, and can become quite humid, but this provides many opportunities to enjoy area's many cool springs and lakes. The average annual rainfall is 56.8 inches, with most of that in the months of June through September.
