Gainesville Vacation Rentals, Homes, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals
Gainesville
is located southwest of Jacksonville along Interstate 75 in a woodsy region renowned for its crystal springs and winding rivers. This sprawling town is home to the University of Florida where many visitors are Gator football fans and parents of students. Therefore, you will find plenty of reasonable and affordable lodging and restaurants in Gainesville. The surrounding area also has several state parks and interesting gardens and geological sites. The Devil’s Millhopper State Geological Site is a 63-acre park with a huge sinkhole that was formed when the roof of an underground cavern collapsed. Visitors can climb down to the floor of this geological treat, spying frogs, ferns, fossilized shark teeth and other ancient fossils along the way. The Morningside Nature Center/Pioneer Farm is a nice place for a picnic or hike along the paths that run through woods of longleaf pines. There is also a re-created Florida pioneer farm at the Nature Center, complete with log barn and heirloom garden. Other places to visit in the Gainesville area include the Florida Museum of Natural History, Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art and Paynes Prairie State Preserve.
North Central Florida, in the Gainesville area, has hot and humid summers with frequent thunderstorms. The rainy season generally runs from May through November. Northern Florida receives approximately 60 percent of its rain during this period, although thunderstorms usually pass quickly and the sunshine returns. In winter, however, continental low-pressure systems can bring longer periods of cloudiness and rain to the area. As a peninsula, Florida receives breezes from both the Gulf and the Atlantic. During winter months, these breezes, plus prevailing winds from the north can make northern Florida somewhat cooler than the southern areas. In general, however, North Central Florida's semi-tropical winter climate can only be described as delightful.
