Gasparilla Island
is approximately 43 miles northwest of Fort Myers and 23 miles southwest of Punta Gorda. As one of a chain of barrier islands that extends along the Gulf coast of the state, Gasparilla Island is separated from the mainland by Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound. Access to the island is via the Boca Grande Causeway at CR775 and Placida. Long before roads to southwest Florida were even in use, wealthy northerners came by train to spend the winter on beautiful Gasparilla Island. Today, condominiums and modern homes sprawl along the island, although the town of Boca Grande looks much as it did for a century or more. Swimming, shelling, fishing, sailing, hiking and picnicking are just some of the activities you can engage in on Gasparilla Island. Although quiet and peaceful most of the year, the island’s relaxed atmosphere is disrupted in Spring when fishermen descend with a vengeance on the island that is considered one of the best tarpon fishing spots in the world. One of the island’s most interesting features is the still-working US Coast Guard wooden lighthouse. It is located in the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse and State Recreation Area. This area has a very scenic view of Boca Grande Pass, a swift waterway that is the entrance to Charlotte Harbor. Swimming is not allowed here, but the recreation area has several other small swimming beaches further north along Gulf Boulevard.

Gasparilla Island Weather & Climate
The Southwest Region of Florida, between Sarasota and Fort Myers, has comfortable weather year round. At 5 to 25 feet above sea level, the region has a subtropic climate that is checked by the tempering influence of the Gulf of Mexico. The Peace River, as well as the Gulf of Mexico, contributes to the hot and humid climate in the summertime (but it's not unbearable due to cooling Gulf breezes.)Prevailing winds are normally 12-18 mph. The rainy season lasts from June through September, with rain spread fairly evenly throughout those months. Thunderstorms tend to pop up quickly but also dissipate just as quickly, with the sunshine quickly returning. The winters are lovely with warm afternoons and mild evenings and much less rain. Hurricane season generally runs late summer through late October in the Gulf of Mexico.
