Grassy Key
is a sleepy little Key located just twenty minutes from the heart of Marathon. Legend has it that this small, peaceful place was not named for its vegetation, which is mostly native trees and shrubs, but for an early settler named Grassy. A few families who operate fishing camps and motels primarily inhabit the area. Grassy Key is home to the Dolphin Research Center, which was created by Milton Santini, who is also the creator of the original movie, “Flipper.” This non-profit organization offers tours and several programs that allow visitors to interact with the dolphins. Other activities near Grassy Key include fishing, swimming, snorkeling, biking, hiking and wildlife viewing. The nearby Curry Hammock State Park offers 260 acres of upland hammock, wetlands and mangroves on the ocean and bay side of U.S. Highway 1. On the bay side, there is a trail through thick woodlands to the rocky shore. The ocean side is more developed and has a sandy beach, public restrooms, bathhouse, picnic tables and parking lot. Manatees frequent this area that is popular with kayakers and it’s also a birding paradise. Grassy Key is 55 miles from Key West and 100 miles south of Miami.
The "Heart of the Keys," is what locals dubbed the central Florida Keys area that includes Marathon and Grassy Key. These islands enjoy a warm, tropical climate year round. Islanders have a saying that "wherever you are right now, chances are the weather is better in the Florida Keys." The heat, even in summertime, is never unbearable due to the cooling effect of the ocean waters and refreshing breezes. Also, with no skyscrapers and urban sprawl, temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler on the Keys than mainland Florida. Although they receive most of their yearly rainfall during the months of June through September, including thunderstorms, usually these storms pass quickly with sunshine returning for the rest of the day. The hurricane season is officially August through November, but a direct hit for the Keys is rare.
