High rise buildings are clustered downtown where Jacksonville has become a major financial center. There are also shady, historical residential areas, Navy bases, twenty miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches and lots of nearby state parks to explore. You will never run out of things to see and do in Jacksonville. Several championship golf courses are located nearby; many of which are ranked among the top in the country. There is also horseback riding along the beach and dunes, fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. The stunning sand dunes are all just a twenty to thirty minute drive east of downtown at Jacksonville’s four beach communities. Other places to visit include the Jacksonville Historical Center, Jacksonville Maritime Museum, Fort George Island, and the Fort George Cultural State Park. Jacksonville also has shopping opportunities galore. The Avondale/Riverside historic district on the north bank of the St. Johns River has boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, clothing, books and records. San Marco Square, south of the river, is a quaint shopping district in the middle of a prestigious residential area.
Northeastern Florida along the Atlantic coast near the Georgia border, enjoys a year round mild climate. Hot, humid summers and warm, mild winters attract lots of visitors to this area in all four seasons of the year. Florida, as a whole, has three basic climatic zones that are classified as "hot-humid." Northern Florida, in the Jacksonville-Amelia Island region is somewhat cooler than the southern part of the state due to its latitude, prevailing northeasterly winds and the cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. It can rain anytime of the year in northeastern Florida, but the official "rainy" season runs from May through October, with September being the wettest month of the year. Winters are sunny and mild, with cool evenings.
