It is just a few miles east of Marathon and a few miles west of Islamorada. The town of Key Colony was founded in the early 1950s and was incorporated as a city in 1957. There is an abundance of recreational activities available here, including a city golf course and tennis court. Other recreational facilities on the island offer horseshoes, a basketball court, and a children’s playground with swings, merry-go-rounds, tetherball, a gym, swinging bridge, seesaws and spring hobby horses. Walking and jogging trails are found throughout the city with various boards located in front of the City Hall marking the courses along the Causeway, East Ocean and West Ocean Drives. These paths can also be used by bicyclists. Key Colony Beach is just minutes from the other islands of the Florida Keys, such as Marathon, with its museums, fishing, boating and snorkeling, and Grassy Key - a small, peaceful island, perfect for sightseeing and wildlife viewing. Key West is approximately 50 miles away. Key Colony Beach holds several special events throughout the year, such as “Key Colony Beach Day,” an event that celebrates the founding of the city with live music, good food, vendors, games and more. “Taste of the Islands” is another annual fundraiser that presents local cuisine and food samples from some of the area’s best restaurants. |
