Lake Helen is located in Volusia County north of Orlando and near Lake Woodruff, Lake Ashby and the Ocala National Forest. Starting from a single log cabin in 1858, this area around a small lake to the southeast of Deland remained undeveloped until Henry DeLand began the building process in 1883. He named it after his daughter Helen, established a sawmill, built a hotel and the town was off and running. More recently downtown development surrounds an equestrian and recreational area. The population of the town is approximately 2,740 and it is a quiet, lovely community with a rural atmosphere. Hidden away in the southeastern corner of Lake Helen is a unique cluster of tiny cottages that makes up the spiritualist settlement of Cassadaga. A huge 19th century hotel dominates the tiny community, along with shops that sell new age tapes, crystals and other spiritual items. Recreational activities around Lake Helen include boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking and camping. Many good quality fishing lakes are nearby and Lake Helen is known for its bass fishing. It is about a one-hour drive from Lake Helen to Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center. Tampa is approximately 139 miles away and Miami is 253 miles.

Central Florida, situated at the approximate geographic center of the state, enjoys year round warm weather. Although it rains nearly every day in the summertime, it rarely interferes with outdoor plans because thunderstorms tend to pass quickly, with the sunshine returning soon afterwards. Expect hot and humid conditions throughout the summer months. Virtually every structure in central Florida is air conditioned, which always provides relief, as does swimming in the nearby "Chain of Lakes" region.
