Lehigh Acres
is a community of approximately 50,000 located on the southern Gulf Coast near Fort Myers. It got its start in the 1950s when businessman Lee Ratner bought 20,000 acres of land in Lee County and named it the Lucky Lee Ranch. Eventually he helped establish a community here that has since stretched to cover 100 square miles and 60,000 acres and is a growing town of retirees and young families. Located less than twenty miles from Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres is full of ponds, lakes and canals and is within 30 miles of some of the finest beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Boaters can enjoy a direct route to the Gulf by way of the Caloosahatchee River and Lake Okeechobee. Other recreational activities in Lehigh Acres includes fishing, golf at 5 championship courses, biking, tennis and hiking. Lehigh Acres is host to an annual Spring Festival that includes a “main street” parade, a carnival midway with food, games and rides, gardening competitions and a traditional beauty pageant. A high point of the festival is a five-mile run sponsored by LeHigh Regional Medical Center. This week long festival features different themes of entertainment each night.
Southwest Florida weather is one of the area's biggest assets. The region surrounding Fort Myers and Captiva/Sanibel Island is balmy in April and May, hot and humid (but bearable) June through September, and mild and sunny the rest of the year. The rainy season is June through September, with lots of showers and thunderstorms. The number of days without rain in the summer averages about 15. Late summer is hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico. The winter months, when it is drier with less humidity and almost perfect temperatures, is a great time to enjoy southwest Florida's weather. The white sand beaches of the Gulf and the nearby Caloosahatchee River provide visitors and residents plenty of scenic opportunities to enjoy this wonderful weather, also.
