Lido Key is a barrier island located on the southwest coast of Florida, just west of Sarasota. Bridge access to the island is from downtown Sarasota, or from the north by another barrier island, Longboat Key. This world-class vacation destination is home to the Mote Marine Laboratory, and has made a name for itself as a premier shopping destination, due mostly to the development of St. Armands Circle - a charming center full of classy shops, unique boutiques, art galleries and sidewalk cafes. Along the walkways are palm trees, tropical plants and flowering bushes, which, when coupled with the gentle Gulf breezes, helps makes your shopping experience even more delightful. The main beach on Lido Key is one half-mile southwest of Armands Circle, and features concessions, lifeguards, watercraft, showers and restrooms. This beach is deep and wide – perfect for a sunset stroll. North Lido Beach is more secluded – a windswept natural area that is easy to get to and very private, however, there are no lifeguards on duty and the currents are very swift. South Lido Park Nature Center is located at the southern tip of Lido Key, and offers great views of the skyline of downtown Sarasota and the Gulf. There are canoe trails that meander through the mangroves in South Lido Park, as well as shaded picnic areas among the Australian Pines.

South Central Florida, along the Gulf Coast near the south end of Tampa Bay, enjoys warm weather with lots of sunshine year round. During the months of June through September, it is hot and humidity hovers around 50 percent or higher. Although this sounds high, Gulf breezes help to moderate temperatures and virtually every structure in Florida is equipped with air conditioning. The rainy season is from late May through October. You can expect almost daily thunderstorms during this time, but they dissipate quickly and within minutes the sun is shining again. Winters are much drier in comparison with lovely warm daytime temperatures and cool nights. The hurricane season in Florida runs from late August through November, but generally plenty of warning time is given for these types of tropical storms.
