Little Torch Key
is part of the Lower Keys, located along U.S. Highway 1 between Key West and Marathon and just south of Big Pine Key in the Gulf of Mexico. This little island is named for the torchwood trees that grow here, and is a tranquil, quiet place that isn’t overcrowded. For divers, the spectacular corals of Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary are just a few miles away, and Little Torch Key is home to an exclusive resort located just offshore of the island. All of the islands of the Lower Keys are known for their family-oriented resorts and restaurants and abundance of outdoor recreation. You can snorkel and dive at the Looe Key coral reefs, go fishing in the backcountry or in the deep waters beyond the reef. Tour the mangrove forests and wetlands or the sandy lagoons of uninhabited Saddlebunch Keys. Visit the other nearby small Keys such as Cudjoe, Sugarloaf and tiny Little Duck Key. Nearby, you will find Bahia Honda State Park with its white sandy beaches and abundant wildlife. Bahia Honda Key frequently makes the list of most beautiful beaches in America. Spend the day sightseeing at places such as No Name Key Bridge, National Key Deer Refuge and Blue Hole, which is a small, freshwater pond that is home to alligators, turtles, and fish that can be safely viewed from an observation deck. At the end of the day, sit back and relax at one of the island’s restaurants or tiki bars as you reflect on another great day in the Florida Keys.
The "Heart of the Keys," is what locals dubbed the central Florida Keys area that includes Marathon and Grassy Key. These islands enjoy a warm, tropical climate year round. Islanders have a saying that "wherever you are right now, chances are the weather is better in the Florida Keys." The heat, even in summertime, is never unbearable due to the cooling effect of the ocean waters and refreshing breezes. Also, with no skyscrapers and urban sprawl, temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler on the Keys than mainland Florida. Although they receive most of their yearly rainfall during the months of June through September, including thunderstorms, usually these storms pass quickly with sunshine returning for the rest of the day. The hurricane season is officially August through November, but a direct hit for the Keys is rare.
