Matanzas
is located approximately fifty miles south of Jacksonville, and only fourteen miles south of St. Augustine in St. Johns County, Florida. A perfect, year-round climate with sun-kissed days, balmy nights, and quiet, uncrowded beaches are what draw visitors to Matanzas. The Matanzas Inlet is bordered on the north by the “Fort Matanzas National Monument” and on the south by private landowners, with access to both the Matanzas River and the beach. Activities in the area include swimming, shelling, canoeing and kayaking the Intracoastal Waterway, offshore and flats fishing, tubing in nearby warm spring waters, golf and tennis. Driving is permitted on parts of the beach, and Washington Oaks State Park, right next door to Matanzas, has trails for hiking and biking. Matanzas has a very convenient location, within an easy drive to many of Florida’s top attractions. Less than a half -hour drive takes you to all the quaint shops, restaurants and history of St. Augustine, America’s oldest city. Orlando and Walt Disney World are less than two hours away, Daytona Beach is a half-hour drive and the Kennedy Space Center is sixty minutes.
The Northeast Coast of Florida, in the Jacksonville/Atlantic Beach/St. Augustine region enjoys year round warm temperatures. Basically, there are three seasons, Spring, Summer and Fall. Classified as a semi-tropical climate with hot and humid summers, the northeast coast receives lots of showers and thunderstorms in the summer, and cooling ocean breezes helps moderate temperatures. Thunderstorms are usually localized and short, and therefore do not interfere with outdoor plans too much. In winter, prevailing winds from the north keeps it a few degrees cooler than southern Florida. The rainy season runs May through October, with September generally being the wettest month. Winters are sunny, dry and mild with cool evenings. On average there are 24 days of each month in winter that are dry.
