Monticello
is a small town located just northeast of Tallahassee near Lake Miccosukee and the Georgia state line. This picturesque little town is a “Florida Main Street Community,” with Victorian and Ante-bellum architecture and towering old oaks that form a canopy over the roads. Monticello is also a “Tree City,” where spring Dogwoods and summer Crape Myrtles make it beautiful place to visit. There are lots of historic places to visit in Monticello, such as the 1890 Perkins Opera House and the restored 1906 County Courthouse. The Florida Museum of Natural History’s “Aucilla River Prehistory Project” documents Paleo-Indian activity in Florida of approximately 12,000 years ago. Monticello is home to the annual “Watermelon Festival,” a tradition for 53 years. This festival known as “A Slice of the Good Life” is usually held in mid-June. Sit along the shady streets to watch a parade, enjoy seed-spitting contests, a barbecue and other fun family activities. As part of the “Keystone County,” the Monticello area abounds with outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, hiking and canoeing the Aucilla and Wacissa Rivers. A special treat is to bike the “100-Mile Canopy Roads,” a trail that loops from the western trailheads in Tallahassee, over rolling hills and through stately oaks, and on through Monticello’s 27-block historic district.

Monticello Weather & Climate
The Panhandle Region known as the "Big Bend" is near the Georgia State line to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. This region enjoys a somewhat cooler climate in the wintertime than the southern part of the state, due to its latitude and cold winds from the north. However, daytime temperatures in winter are still generally warm enough for outdoor activities, with chilly nights. Summers are hot and humid, due to its' proximity to the Gulf and frequent thundershowers. The Panhandle region receives the most rain of any area in the state of Florida, with nearly 60 inches per year. June through September are the wettest months. Hurricane season officially lasts from August through late October, but ample warning is given for these types of storms.
