Neptune Beach
was, at one time, part of Jacksonville Beach until it seceded and became the city of Neptune Beach. This lovely, 2.5 square-mile city is bounded to the north by Atlantic Beach and to the south by Jacksonville Beach. It lies on a barrier island between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. The city of Neptune Beach maintains a high quality of life through strict growth management standards, and is more residential than its neighboring seaside communities. However, it does offer easy access to quiet beaches where the deep blue-turquoise water, dazzling white sand, rolling sand dunes and sea grass makes a stunning backdrop for the city. Neptune Beach is considered one of the two best surfing spots in the area. The other is Atlantic Beach. Other beach activities include swimming, sunning, beachcombing, diving or snorkeling. Horseback riding on nearby dunes is a treat, and hiking, biking, fly-fishing and golf are also available. Neptune Beach has a wide variety of restaurants, shopping and lodging accommodations, including rental homes with ocean views. The city of Jacksonville is approximately twenty miles west and has museums, five star restaurants and lots of shopping, including the quaint San Marco Square. The historic city of St. Augustine is just a 30-minute drive away.
Northeastern Florida along the Atlantic coast near the Georgia border, enjoys a year round mild climate. Hot, humid summers and warm, mild winters attract lots of visitors to this area in all four seasons of the year. Florida, as a whole, has three basic climatic zones that are classified as "hot-humid." Northern Florida, in the Jacksonville-Amelia Island region is somewhat cooler than the southern part of the state due to its latitude, prevailing northeasterly winds and the cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. It can rain anytime of the year in northeastern Florida, but the official "rainy" season runs from May through October, with September being the wettest month of the year. Winters are sunny and mild, with cool evenings.
