Niceville
is a small town located in the popular resort area of Florida’s northwest Panhandle region known as the “Emerald Coast.” The town of Niceville sits just east of Pensacola between the communities of Crestview and Fort Walton Beach. Its’ year round mild weather and close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, Chocktawhatchee Bay and numerous lakes and rivers makes it a recreational playground. This region is known worldwide for its sugar soft, dazzling white beaches and emerald waters, and has routinely been voted as “Best Beach of the South,” and “Top Family Destination” by Southern Living Magazine readers. Just a few of the activities in which to participate include swimming, beachcombing and shelling, snorkeling and scuba diving, water skiing, parasailing, canoeing, fishing and golf. The Gulfarium in Fort Walton Beach is one of the oldest performing porpoise shows of its kind in the country and also features sea lions, otters, birds and many other exotic sea creatures. The Air Force Armament Museum, located outside the main gate of Eglin Air Force Base, features a theater, gun vault, outside exhibits, picnic area and gift shop. It’s an excellent museum that gives the history of the U.S. Air Force and houses over 6,000 Air Force artifacts and memorabilia. Other attractions near Niceville include The Indian Temple Mound Museum and the Focus Science Center.
The Northwest Florida Panhandle, in the region known as the "Emerald Coast," enjoys warm temperatures year round. The state of Florida, as a whole, is among the wettest states in the U.S., receiving at least 50 inches of rain annually, and the Panhandle region has the most rain of anyplace in the state. However, many of these showers and thunderstorms pass quickly and the sunshine prevails. Tropical winds from the south, along with the Gulf and abundant rain, create hot, humid conditions May through September. The rest of the year is much more comfortable, with mild days and cool nights, less humidity and less rain. Hurricane season officially lasts August through October, but most of these storms blow into the Atlantic and miss Florida entirely. In the case when one does reach shore, ample warning time is generally given for these storms.
