North Captiva Island
is located north of Captiva Island and south of Cayo Costa. No bridges lead to this enchanting island paradise. Most visitors arrive by prearranged water taxi from nearby Pine Island or by private plane. You will find no cars on the island. North Captiva is four miles long and one-half mile wide, known for its dazzling white sand beaches and lush tropical vegetation. One half of the island is a 750-acre state preserve where many come to experience the isolation and complete absence of “civilization.” This is one of the few places on Earth where the delicate balance between nature and man has withstood the test of time. Here, you feel at peace and in complete harmony with nature. Others come to Captiva Island just to relax on the sun-kissed beaches, and for the shelling. Without the influx of tourist crowds on the island, there is an abundance and wide variety of seashells to be found. Other activities available on North Captiva include boating, fishing, nature walks, birdwatching, biking and diving. Rentals are available for powerboats, bicycles, kayaks, sailboats and fishing equipment. You may want to bring your own groceries to the island, but if you forget something, North Captiva does have quaint restaurants and the Captiva Island Market Place has all the basics.
Southwest Florida weather is one of the area's biggest assets. The region surrounding Fort Myers and Captiva/Sanibel Island is balmy in April and May, hot and humid (but bearable) June through September, and mild and sunny the rest of the year. The rainy season is June through September, with lots of showers and thunderstorms. The number of days without rain in the summer averages about 15. Late summer is hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico. The winter months, when it is drier with less humidity and almost perfect temperatures, is a great time to enjoy southwest Florida's weather. The white sand beaches of the Gulf and the nearby Caloosahatchee River provide visitors and residents plenty of scenic opportunities to enjoy this wonderful weather, also.
