Osprey
is located in Sarasota County, just south of the city of Sarasota. It is a very diverse residential community that offers a myriad of activities. There are two main attractions within the city. Historic Spanish Point is one of the original homesteads in Sarasota County where the buildings have been carefully restored. You can tour the property and see how oranges were packaged in the mid to late 1800s, when the homestead was part of the John and Eliza Webb citrus farm. The home on the property is furnished to depict the pioneer era of the Osprey region. Touring the grounds also gives visitors a chance to see many native Florida plants and trees and it is a wonderful spot for an afternoon picnic. Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey has a number of recreational activities, as well as being a nature preserve where several thousand species call home. Bald eagles, bobcats, river otters and alligators can all be seen in the park. There are fifteen miles of biking trails in Oscar Scherer Park, canoeing and kayaking (bring your own or rent one inside the park,) fishing, picnicking and camping. Osprey is located on the water, but all of the beaches here are private. However, nearby public beaches can be found at the south end of Casey Key in Nokomis or to the north on Siesta Key. There are no fast food restaurants in Osprey, but several very good local restaurants that are popular for breakfast and lunch. Fine dining is available on the waterfront.
South Central Florida, along the Gulf Coast near the south end of Tampa Bay, enjoys warm weather with lots of sunshine year round. During the months of June through September, it is hot and humidity hovers around 50 percent or higher. Although this sounds high, Gulf breezes help to moderate temperatures and virtually every structure in Florida is equipped with air conditioning. The rainy season is from late May through October. You can expect almost daily thunderstorms during this time, but they dissipate quickly and within minutes the sun is shining again. Winters are much drier in comparison with lovely warm daytime temperatures and cool nights. The hurricane season in Florida runs from late August through November, but generally plenty of warning time is given for these types of tropical storms.
