Panacea Vacation Rentals, Homes, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals
Panacea
is a small community located in Wakulla County on Florida’s north Gulf coast or “Big Bend” area. Called the “unspoiled, other Florida,” Panacea is situated in a region that is filled with natural, scenic beauty and numerous opportunities for outdoor fun – including some of the best fishing (and seafood!) in the world. Hiking trails are available at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail, Wakulla Springs State Park and Ochlockonee River State Park. Biking is especially popular at the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail and St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The Sopchoppy River and Wakulla River offer canoeing and kayaking, while camping is available at the Apalachicola National Forest. Other activities near Panacea include birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Of course, the beaches in the area are outstanding. Mashes Island is good for children because there are always low water levels and plenty of tide pools that invite exploration. Two of the country’s “top ten rated beaches” are located just a short drive from Panacea – St. George Island State Park near Apalachicola and St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, near Port St. Joe. Other area sights include the St. Mark’s Lighthouse, the historic San Marcos de Apalache, and the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory.
Florida's Northwest Panhandle between Tallahassee and Panama City is somewhat cooler than the rest of the state due to its latitude and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. There are a significant number of days November - March when the combination of sea breezes and prevailing winds from the north force cold air into the area. The Panhandle also receives the most rain of any region in the state. In summertime, abundant sunshine and the Gulf, along with 58 inches of rainfall per year, contributes to a hot and humid climate. The chance of showers and thunderstorms can be expected anytime of the year, although the rainy season generally runs May - September, with August and September being the wettest months. Hurricane season officially lasts from August through late October, but ample warning is given for these types of storms.
