Pensacola Beach
is located on the skinny barrier island of Santa Rosa just five miles southeast of the city of Pensacola. The island, which sits between the Gulf of Mexico and the town of Gulf Breeze on the mainland, has beautiful white sand beaches, natural areas and the town of Pensacola Beach. A myriad of sports, such as swimming, snorkeling, boating, fishing, parasailing, water skiing and golf await you at Pensacola Beach. The 1,471-foot-long Pensacola Beach Pier bills itself as the longest pier on the Gulf of Mexico, where visitors come just to watch the stunning sunsets. Fishing off the pier is also permitted, and you’ll find everything from pole rentals to bait shops located here. On the side of the island facing Santa Rosa Sound are eight miles of recreational trails leading directly to the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The National Seashore has day use areas all along the pristine shoreline, with picnic facilities and rest rooms. At the western tip of the island is Fort Pickens, which dates to 1834. However, the real attraction at this historic site is the beach with its spectacular views of Pensacola Bay and the lighthouse across the inlet. There is also a gift shop, nature exhibits and campgrounds in the park. Lodging in Pensacola Beach ranges from low-key motels to beach houses and spectacular waterfront condominiums.
Northwest Florida just east of the Alabama State line near the Gulf Islands National Seashore, has a semi-tropical climate with hot, humid summers and warm winters. More than 50 inches of rain is received in this region per year, with most of it in the months between May and September. This, along with the Gulf of Mexico, creates high humidity during this time. Thunderstorms are almost a daily occurrence in the summertime, but they generally do not last long and the sunshine returns. Winter, by comparison, is delightfully much cooler and drier, with perfect conditions for outdoor activities. The hurricane season runs August through October, but direct hits are rare and excellent forecasting gives plenty of warning time for these types of storms.
