Ramrod Key
is part of what is generally referred to as the “Lower Keys” of Florida. For more than sixty years, this region which runs from the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge at Sunshine Key to Stock Island has advocated the preservation of the vast natural wonders of the Keys, which has earned it the title of the “Natural Keys.” The Lower Keys are home to two national wildlife refuges, a national marine sanctuary and a state park. Visitors to Ramrod Key enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, diving and snorkeling in the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf. The famous Looe Key Reef and Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary is a short boat ride away, in the waters off nearby Big Pine Key. Ramrod Key is approximately 15 minutes to beaches of Bahia Honda State Park, which is also the site of picnic and camping facilities, shopping, rental cabins and a marina. The National Key Deer Refuge, established in 1957, protects the endangered Key deer – and today the refuge encompasses more than 8,000 acres of prime Key deer territory that runs from Bahia Honda Key to the eastern shores of Sugarloaf Key, out to the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. Ramrod Key gives you a chance to experience the full flavor of the Keys, including restaurants that feature local seafood and Caribbean dishes and tiki bars, in a relaxed, peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere, plus it’s just 25 minutes to Key West and 30 minutes to Marathon.
The "Heart of the Keys," is what locals dubbed the central Florida Keys area that includes Marathon and Grassy Key. These islands enjoy a warm, tropical climate year round. Islanders have a saying that "wherever you are right now, chances are the weather is better in the Florida Keys." The heat, even in summertime, is never unbearable due to the cooling effect of the ocean waters and refreshing breezes. Also, with no skyscrapers and urban sprawl, temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler on the Keys than mainland Florida. Although they receive most of their yearly rainfall during the months of June through September, including thunderstorms, usually these storms pass quickly with sunshine returning for the rest of the day. The hurricane season is officially August through November, but a direct hit for the Keys is rare.
