Sanford is a picturesque mid-sized city of approximately 47,000 residents, located in central Florida. It serves as the county seat for Seminole County and sits on the south shore of Lake Monroe at the head of the St. Johns River. Several city parks, along with Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River, provides unlimited recreational opportunities. The St. Johns River is known for its natural beauty and offers swimming, canoeing, fishing, and other activities. Lake Monroe is actually part of the St. Johns River, and the Sanford RiverWalk is a 1.2 mile palm-lined promenade that meanders along the waterfront of Lake Monroe. Boating is, of course, very popular in Sanford, and three fine marinas are located within the town. Sanford is also home to the Central Florida Zoological Park, which is located at Lake Monroe. The zoo is now also home to a botanical garden that includes gardens with over 800 species of plants and flowers. A historic walking tour is available in downtown Sanford, which takes about an hour to complete. Sanford actually has two historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places – the downtown commercial district and the residential district. Sanford has a small town, rural atmosphere that is appealing to families, yet its just a short drive to the metropolitan areas of Orlando and Daytona Beach. Its central location makes it very convenient to visiting these areas, while providing a safe, less hectic place to base your central Florida vacation.
