Seaside
is located approximately 60 miles east of Pensacola in the northwest panhandle of Florida. This small community was once called the “down home utopia” by Time Magazine and was used as the setting for the 1998 movie, “The Truman Show,” starring Jim Carey. The Victorian style homes with white picket fences, and billboard free village is indeed reminiscent of a storybook town. Many of Seaside’s charming streets are cobblestone, and the cottages within the city limits each has a distinct personality. The area offers golf, tennis, deep-sea fishing, hiking, biking and swimming. There are several quiet retreat centers in town for conferences and seminars. Many privately owned, furnished cottages are available for rent along the Gulf of Mexico, and restaurants in Seaside range from down-to-earth bistros to elegant inns. Seaside’s central square and open-air market offer a number of whimsical boutiques featuring clothing, jewelry, and arts and crafts. In the heart of town is the Ruskin Place Artist Colony, which has a nice collection of small, unusual shops and art galleries.
The Northwest Florida Panhandle , in the region known as the "Emerald Coast," enjoys warm temperatures year round. The state of Florida, as a whole, is among the wettest states in the U.S., receiving at least 50 inches of rain annually, and the Panhandle region has the most rain of anyplace in the state. However, many of these showers and thunderstorms pass quickly and the sunshine prevails. Tropical winds from the south, along with the Gulf and abundant rain, create hot, humid conditions May through September. The rest of the year is much more comfortable, with mild days and cool nights, less humidity and less rain. Hurricane season officially lasts August through October, but most of these storms blow into the Atlantic and miss Florida entirely. In the case when one does reach shore, ample warning time is generally given for these storms.
