Sopchoppy
is a tiny village located in Wakulla County just southwest of Tallahassee and approximately four miles north of the Ochlockonee River State Park. Recreation in this 392-acre park includes hiking, boating and fishing, and in summer months there are ranger-guided walks and campfire programs. If you like getting away from it all and being one with nature – Sopchoppy is the place for you. The population is 250 full time residents – in fact, the whole population of Wakulla County is only about 20,000. Other communities in the area include Ochlockonee Bay, St. Marks and Newport – with each one being near a river. Other recreational opportunities include hunting, swimming, canoeing, biking, picnicking and camping. The town of Sopchoppy is situated within the Apalachicola National Forest, the largest of Florida’s national forests, comprised of 564,000 acres of wetlands, forests, the Ochlockonee and Sopchoppy Rivers and part of the State’s Recreational Trail System. There are also three highly developed campgrounds, three boat landings, the Fort Gadsden Historic Site and the Leon Sinks Geological Area inside the Forest. Sopchoppy is also well known for their unique annual festival, the Sopchoppy Worm Grunt’n Festival held the first week of April each year. This is a very remote area of Florida, but Sopchoppy does have good restaurants, grocery stores, bait and tackle shops, a hardware store, and even a tea room.

Sopchoppy Weather & Climate
Florida's Northwest Panhandle between Tallahassee and Panama City is somewhat cooler than the rest of the state due to its latitude and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. There are a significant number of days November - March when the combination of sea breezes and prevailing winds from the north force cold air into the area. The Panhandle also receives the most rain of any region in the state. In summertime, abundant sunshine and the Gulf, along with 58 inches of rainfall per year, contributes to a hot and humid climate. The chance of showers and thunderstorms can be expected anytime of the year, although the rainy season generally runs May - September, with August and September being the wettest months. Hurricane season officially lasts from August through late October, but ample warning is given for these types of storms.
