St Petersburg is located at the southern tip of Pinellas County, a peninsula bordered on the west by the Gulf of Mexico and on the east and south by Tampa Bay. Legend has it that in 1521, the Spanish adventurer Juan Ponce de Leon came here looking for the fountain of youth. Today, the city has a population of nearly a quarter of a million. Boasting a unique pier and fine museums, St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront is one of Florida’s most beautiful. Here you’ll find a picturesque promenade, great views, interesting shops and fine restaurants. The pier was built in 1899, and today it’s capped by a spaceship-like inverted pyramid offering a five-story complex with 16 specialty shops, four sit-down restaurants and a food court, a tourist information desk, observation deck and the Pier Aquarium. Bike rentals, including two, four and six-seat surrey bicycles can be rented at the Pier, and fishing is available around the exterior of the building along the sea walls (fishing poles can be rented from the Pier Bait House.) You can also rent electric boats at The Electric Marina for a half-hour ride, one hour or for the whole day, and charter sailboats are available for sunset cruises and more. Two of the state’s finest art museums are located in St. Petersburg – The Museum of Fine Arts and The Salvador Dali Museum. For outdoor recreation, St. Petersburg’s flat terrain is ideal for biking, in-line skaters and hikers. The nearby Pinellas Trail is especially good and runs 47 miles from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs.

St Petersburg Weather & Climate

Temperate and mild, the central West Coast of Florida in the Clearwater/St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay area enjoys a semi tropical climate with warm Gulf breezes and plenty of sunshine. Frequent thunderstorms, short in duration, dominate the summertime weather patterns, where humidity usually hovers near the 100 percent mark. Even with these frequent summer storms, however, this area of the state enjoys the most days of sunshine per year - with an average of 361. June through September are the wettest months, with the rest of the year being pretty dry by comparison. The most pleasant weather is found during the winter months between November and March when the humidity becomes more bearable and winds from the Bay and Gulf keep temperatures moderate.
