Steinhatchee
is located in the “Big Bend” of Florida on the banks of the Steinhatchee River overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. This is approximately 90 miles south of Tallahassee and 70 miles west of Gainesville. Renowned for its fishing of trout and redfish, the river has a deep-water port that is adequate for large vessels and offshore fishing excursions. The small village of Steinhatchee was at one time an active commercial fishing village where most residents worked in either the fishing or logging industry. The town has retained its quaint atmosphere and pristine natural surroundings for over a century. All of this combines to make it one of Florida’s best-kept secrets. Scalloping is a fun family activity, and other sports include swimming, picnicking, hiking and biking. There are several parks located nearby, and Hagan’s Cove, Steinhatchee Falls, Keaton Beach and Dallas Creek Landing are all within a short distance of town. Fall and winter also provides great fishing in the Steinhatchee River and on the grass flats for speckled trout and other species. For a different kind of Florida vacation, Steinhatchee is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful outdoors, away from the usual crowds.
Mild winters with plenty of bright sunshine attract thousands of visitors to Florida's Northwest Gulf Coast each year. Situated south of Tallahassee and west of Gainesville, this region enjoys 24 days each month, December through February, that are dry and warm with delightfully cool evenings. Summers, especially June through August, are very hot, with frequent showers and thunderstorms. Due to the abundance of warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and the hot tropical sun, conditions are perfect for the formation of these storms, although they generally do not last long. Sunshine, in the rainy summer months, still stays at an average of nine hours per day. Late summer is the hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, although plenty of advanced warnings for these storms are available to the public.
