Sugarloaf Key Vacation Rentals, Homes, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals

Sugarloaf Key is one of the larger of the Lower Florida Keys, and legend says that it got its name from the Indian maidens who lived on the Key and resembled an old fashioned loaf of sugar. Population on Sugarloaf Key began to grow in the 1960s, and today the area is a thriving community with a public school that services all of the Keys from Bahia Honda to Big Coppitt. The Lower Keys are known, of course, for their tropical environment, but also are most known for their natural, unspoiled setting and abundant wildlife. The Lower Keys are the most “untouched” by population growth and human “progress.” However, as with all of the Lower Keys, you will find a wide variety of water sports on Sugarloaf Key. Choose to spend your time fishing, boating, diving and snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking or canoeing. The main attraction on Sugarloaf Key is the lush surroundings, crystal blue water, white sand beaches, unique wildlife and a variety of colorful, tropical plants and flowers such as bougainvillea, hibiscus, orchid and frangipani. Tropical delights such as Key limes, mangos, avocados, papayas and starfruit are grown here. There are parks and wildlife preserves nearby, and land based activities such as hiking, biking, sunning and shelling are available. Key West is just 15 minutes away for shopping, dining, sightseeing and nightlife. Sugarloaf Key is the ultimate place to relax and unwind in the sun-drenched tropical Florida Keys.

Sugarloaf Key Weather & Climate

The Lower Keys,  including Key West, enjoys a tropical climate that is never too hot in summer or too cold in winter. Due to the lack of urban sprawl and super highways, there is nothing to radiate the sun's heat. That, plus being surrounded by water and cooling ocean breezes make unbearable hot summer days a rarity on the Keys. The rainy season runs May through October and thunderstorms are possible, but they never last long and the sunshine quickly returns. The Keys receive the least rain of anyplace in the state. The hurricane season is officially late August through November, although storms are almost unheard of after late October. Winters have little rain and there is never a chance of frost on the Keys. The all time record low for the Keys was 41 degrees back in 1981.
