Tarpon Springs Vacation Rentals, Homes, Condos, Villas and Beach Rentals

Tarpon Springs is considered by many to be one of Florida’s most fascinating small towns. It is tucked into a little harbor at the mouth of the Anclote River, just 23 miles northwest of Tampa. It is known as the “Sponge Capital of the World, “ because Greek immigrants settled here in the late 19th century to harvest sponges, which grew in abundance offshore. Today about one third of the population of Tarpon Springs are direct descendants of the original settlers. The docks in Tarpon Springs have a lively, carnival like atmosphere with quaint old buildings housing souvenir shops, family restaurants playing Greek music, and booths offering sightseeing and fishing boat cruises. The old central business district on Tarpon Avenue has become a hub of antique shops and art galleries. At the Cultural Center, you can pick up directions for a walking/bus tour of this historic district. The Spongeorama is a museum that shows and tells all there is to know about the lowly sea creature – the sponge. Just south of the docks, towering oaks and restored Victorian homes face the winding Spring Bayou Creek, making this one of the most picturesque small towns in the state. There are several annual Greek festivals held in Tarpon Springs each year, with the Greek Orthodox Epiphany Celebration in January being the largest.

Tarpon Springs Weather & Climate

Temperate and mild,  the central West Coast of Florida in the Clearwater/St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay area enjoys a semi tropical climate with warm Gulf breezes and plenty of sunshine. Frequent thunderstorms, short in duration, dominate the summertime weather patterns, where humidity usually hovers near the 100 percent mark. Even with these frequent summer storms, however, this area of the state enjoys the most days of sunshine per year - with an average of 361. June through September are the wettest months, with the rest of the year being pretty dry by comparison. The most pleasant weather is found during the winter months between November and March when the humidity becomes more bearable and winds from the Bay and Gulf keep temperatures moderate.
