Tavernier
is located immediately south of Key Largo proper. This is a quiet community that is most well known for being the home of the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center and Harry Harris Park. A short nature trail runs through the Wild Bird Center into a mangrove forest, and a video explains the center’s mission. Harry Harris Park has a large swimming lagoon, a boat ramp, picnic areas, restrooms and a ballfield. This park is quite popular – especially on weekends. The Keys, of course, are known as the “diving capital of the world,” and they are almost as popular as a fishing destination. Tavernier is very popular with boaters, as Tavernier Creek provides easy access to both Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Water sports abound in the area, such as swimming, snorkeling, water skiing, parasailing, windsurfing and more. There is an “Old World” ambience to Tavernier, and visitors enjoy the laid back, serene atmosphere. Its close proximity to Key Largo makes it a premier destination for kayakers, birders and other eco-tourists. This is a place rich in history and vibrant in beauty and is home to several fine artists who show their work in local galleries around the Keys.
The Florida Keys including Key Largo, Islamorada and Tavernier, enjoy some of the best weather in the world - even in summertime. The hottest day on record was 97 degrees, but those kinds of temperatures are few and far between. There is no urban sprawl to radiate the sun's heat - just lush, natural vegetation, plus the islands are surrounded by cooling ocean waters. Thunderstorms are possible late May through October, but they rarely stick around all day to ruin outdoor plans. In fact, the Keys receive the least rain of anyplace in the state. Winter is delightful and rain is minimal during these months. You will never see a cold front in the Florida Keys in winter - just warm days and mild evenings. The hurricane season peaks in mid-September and officially runs through November, but direct hits are rare for the Keys.
