Umatilla is called the “Gateway to the Ocala National Forest.” It’s a beautiful little town of approximately 2,000 located in central Florida’s Lake County. Founded in 1856 by Nathan Trowell, the unusual name was taken from an Oregon town of the same name and means “laughing waters.” The town of Umatilla was incorporated in 1904. The community’s ideal location near the national forest brings many outdoor recreational opportunities to visitors as well as residents. It is near Alexander Springs Recreation Area, which offers one of the cleanest swimming spots in the state, and also features the southern end of the Florida Trail, which is an unpaved 60-mile long hiking trail. Other activities in the area include horseback riding, canoeing, biking, golf, camping and more. Umatilla has excellent accommodations, restaurants, movie theaters and shopping malls. The town is also host to the Florida Black Bear Festival, usually held the first Saturday in October. The Cracker Christmas Parade and Dog Jog is held each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, with an arts & crafts festival following the parade in Cadwell Park.
