Weeki Wachee is a tiny town located in Hernando County in the heart of Florida’s “Nature Coast,” near Tampa Bay. Hernando County covers approximately 477 square miles and is bounded on the west by the Gulf of Mexico and on the north by the Chassahowitzka Swamp and the Withlacoochee State Forest. Weeki Wachee is the site of Florida’s only natural spring water park, and the Weeki Wachee Preserve is a 6,000 acre protected wildlife area that lies between the Hernando County communities of Spring Hill and Hernando Beach. Brooksville, the county seat for Hernando County was selected as “Florida’s Outstanding Rural Community of the Year” in 2000. With the nearby waters of the Gulf, and many lakes, river and canals, the Weeki Wachee region is known for its’ excellent fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking and swimming. Other activities such as golf, hiking, birdwatching and biking on paved wilderness trails can also be found in the area. Spring Hill is home to the “Weeki Wachee City of Mermaids Show,” which has daily underwater mermaid shows, wilderness river cruises and a petting zoo. Shopping, restaurants, lodging and marinas can be found in the communities of Hernando Beach, Spring Hill and Brooksville. If you tire of the peace and quiet of the Nature Coast, the city of Tampa is just a 35-mile drive from Weeki Wachee.

The Central West Coast just northwest of Tampa Bay, enjoys a semi tropical climate with warm Gulf breezes and plenty of sunshine - 361 days of sun per year. Although thunderstorms are frequent in summertime, they are short in duration and the sun quickly reappears behind the clouds. However, hot temperatures, along with the rain and the Gulf of Mexico help contribute to high humidity levels during this time, as well. June through September receives the most rain, with the rest of the year being pretty dry by comparison. Many believe the most pleasant weather is found during the winter months between November and March when the humidity becomes more bearable and winds from the Bay and Gulf help moderate the temperatures.
