There is both an island and a community located on the island by the name of Big Pine Key. The island consists of approximately 5,800 acres (small compared to Key Largo, which has 22,000 acres.) Although the town of Big Pine Key, or Big Pine as it is called by locals, is the main shopping hub of the Lower Keys, there is plenty of solitude along the beautiful side roads on the island. National Key Deer Refuge is located here; a large expanse of mostly undeveloped pine lands where the diminutive Key Deer live. Big Pine Key is also the jumping off point for numerous snorkeling and dive charters to Looe Key Reef. It is also just minutes to the other islands of the Lower Keys, including Summerland Key, Cudjoe Key, Sugarloaf or Big Coppitt, Big Torch and Little Torch Keys, and of course, Key West. The uninhabited Saddlebunch Keys are a network of sandy lagoons and mangrove islands that make an adventurous and memorable side trip. On Big Pine Key, you can snorkel or dive the Looe Key coral reef, bicycle through Key Deer country, fish in the back country, or troll the blue waters beyond the reef. At sundown, visit one of the island’s tiki bars, and for lodging choose from a quaint resort, vacation home, RV Park or camping. |
