St Marks
is a tiny village located south of Tallahassee on Florida’s northwest panhandle, or the “Big Bend” region of the state. The town is rich in history, but is most well known for being the headquarters of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1931 for wintering migratory birds. It has grown to include over 64,000 acres, of which, 23,000 is forested, with seven rivers and numerous creeks that run through it. The variety of wildlife in St. Marks is almost endless, including alligators, whitetail deer, armadillo and over 270 species of birds. In early October through November, thousands of Monarch butterflies find refuge in St. Marks before continuing their flight across the Gulf of Mexico. Hikers come for the 75 miles of trails that run through St. Marks. A 41-mile section of the Florida National Scenic Trail passes through the refuge, and canoeing, hunting and fishing are also popular activities. Bicycling is allowed on refuge roads and trails. One of Florida’s oldest lighthouses stands in the St. Marks Refuge, an 80-foot high national historic landmark that has been guiding mariners since 1831. The nearby beach is a popular crabbing spot. Other places of interest include the Natural Bridge State Historic Site and the San Marcos de Apalache State Historic Site. For more shopping, restaurants, lodging and nightlife, the city of Tallahassee is just 18 miles away.
The Panhandle Region known as the "Big Bend" is near the Georgia State line to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. This region enjoys a somewhat cooler climate in the wintertime than the southern part of the state, due to its latitude and cold winds from the north. However, daytime temperatures in winter are still generally warm enough for outdoor activities, with chilly nights. Summers are hot and humid, due to its' proximity to the Gulf and frequent thundershowers. The Panhandle region receives the most rain of any area in the state of Florida, with nearly 60 inches per year. June through September are the wettest months. Hurricane season officially lasts from August through late October, but ample warning is given for these types of storms.
